SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul is an international organization of Catholic lay volunteers who make home visits to the suffering and needy in our Parish area. Based on contributions made by our parishioners and discernment on the part of our Vincentians, assistance is offered in the spirit of love, justice and charity.

There is a commitment of one approximate 3-hour period of time which a volunteer makes each week arranged according to his/her availability. Also, it is expected that volunteers attend our Tuesday 4:00PM meetings which are generally one hour in duration.

On-the-job training and timely workshops are offered to enable those who wish to serve in order to maximize their efforts in performing the work to be done.

Separate from our activities here at our St. Theresa conference is the SVDP Diocesan Center, located at 420 West Watkins Road in Phoenix. The center has need for volunteers in the kitchen and dining rooms, medical and dental clinic, food reclamation, special ministries to the homeless, stranded travelers, the incarcerated and their families, and those in need of durable medical equipment and thrift stores.

SANCTITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE

This group of committed Catholics works to promote a Culture of Life “from the womb to the tomb” in the St. Theresa community. “God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end; no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2258) Our purpose is to educate and act on life issues that threaten the sanctity of life in American society including, but not limited to, abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment.

SCRIPTURE STUDY

In-Depth Bible Study Presented by Kevin Saunders

This Bible class features Mr. Saunders in a lecture-based format reading and commenting his way through every chapter and verse of the Bible beginning with the opening Book of Genesis. Mr. Saunders draws upon his vast knowledge of the Middle Eastern world, its culture and customs to engage students in this journey through the Bible. You will need to bring a Bible so that you can follow the course but other than that, come prepared to learn and be blessed in this amazing journey. Feel free to attend the first session as a guest of the class as you discern whether or not to follow the course through the Book of Genesis and then on through the Gospel of Matthew and the Book of Exodus before the class breaks for the summer. There is a fee per semester but NO ONE will ever be turned away if they are not able to cover this cost. Classes are held in Fr. Feeney Hall from 7:00-8:30pm on Thursdays. You can find out more about Mr. Saunders, his background and Biblical expertise by visiting his website at ArizonaBibleClass.com. There you will find a concise biography of Mr. Saunders and a general scope and sequence of the Bible class that he teaches. To date, Mr. Saunders has graduated over 800 men and women in his Valley-wide scripture classes. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to read and study the Bible from a highly regarded scripture scholar right here on the St. Theresa Parish campus.

Bunco: Usually the 3rd Monday of each month 2:00-4:00pm—check the bulletin.  A social dice game involving 100% luck and no skill. Along with a simple set of rules you will find laughter, and new friends.

SET (SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING)

SET training is a Diocesan-based program that was designed to meet the needs of the Diocese’s commitment to protecting all children and youth by offering sexual abuse preventative education sessions. SET classes are required of all clergy and Diocesan and Parish employees, along with all school and parish ministry volunteers. Online renewal and classes for the annual renewal of SET training are offered.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

USHERS

The third way Christ is present at Mass is in the gathered assembly, so, as the first people the assembly will encounter, the importance of the Usher ministry cannot be overstated!  Women, men, and families who can help create a friendly and hospitable environment are welcome in this ministry.  Ushers are on the “front line” of caring for the assembly during Mass – including greeting those entering the church, finding seats at crowded liturgies, assisting ill parishioners or those needing emergency medical attention, and helping orient those who are new or visiting.  Ushers also facilitate collections and the communion procession.  A generally warm and courteous personality, and the ability to calmly and quickly adapt to changing situations, are vital to this ministry.  Ushers typically serve at the Mass they usually attend each weekend.  An interview and registration is required.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Vacation Bible School, VBS, is a week-long summer program in June that uses scripture, songs, skits, games and crafts to teach children about the Bible and the love Jesus has for them. It’s a fun, exciting experience for everyone involved. There are numerous opportunities to serve children through VBS and volunteer hours are available upon request.

VOCATION SUPPORT GROUP
